National Adoption Week

143 Million - Is the pieces of chocolate Pam Carver eats in a year? The pounds of turkey Americans eat on Thanksgiving? Is it the number of cranberries harvested from the bog in Maine each fall?

Sadly it is the number of children around the world waiting to be adopted. Less than one percent of these waiting children are living in the US. The "lucky" ones are being raised by foster moms while waiting for a family, or they are being cared for in an orphanage. Not all children are so lucky. Many are left to fend for themselves or are being raised by their minor siblings.

We are so thankful to have our son Alex, and we love to celebrate all of our adoption milestones. We start in September by celebrating the day we met. Our family day is October 27 - the day we went to court. We wrap up the season by celebrating National Adoption Week in November. Thanks to adoption, we can have the child we so desperately wanted, and our wonderful son can have a family that all children need and deserve.

Just in case you were wondering, National Adoption Week really is a holiday as proclaimed by George Bush in 1989: "Now, therefore, I George Bush, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week beginning November 20, 1989, as National Adoption Week."

In honor of this great family holiday, we ate at Panera. We celebrated our first Adoption Weekend at Panera just a few weeks after we got home with Alex. It was the first restaurant we ate at as a family.

If you would like to find out more about helping orphans, please visit Shaohannah's Hope. They gave us a grant to help adopt Alex, and we consider them family. This holiday season, please pray for the orphans of the world and maybe think of ways you could help them!
